Maggie stared out the window where the swiftly falling snow covered the road and piled up outside. Ordinarily she’d have been entranced by its beauty. Snow wasn’t something a resident of Las Vegas saw every day. It got cold, but not usually cold enough to snow. The sight should have been magical. But when you wanted to escape back to the real world and Mother Nature decided to make the road to the airport too icy for travel, it felt like a cosmic joke at her expense. Be careful what you wish for, because now she had to spend another night in the romantic McMansion.“It’s a blizzard,” she said, stating the obvious.
“I know.” Jason’s tone was grim.
Wasn’t it amazing how much tension six thousand square feet could contain? After their angry words last night, the strain had been palpable all day as they went out of their way to avoid each other, all the while watching the snow falling faster, burying any hope of traveling home by tonight.
Fortunately baby Brady was blissfully unaware of the edginess in the adults around him. His routine of eating, playing, napping and now down for the night had remained unchanged, which made him the only happy camper in the cabin.
She glanced over her shoulder at Jason. “This is the beginning of April, for goodness’ sake. How can there be weather-related travel delays in the beginning of April?”
He folded his arms over his chest. “Did you ever hear of the Donner Party?”
Eyes wide, she turned to face him full on. “There’s no food here? Brady needs formula. And—”
“Don’t panic.” He held up his hands. “We have rations. I just meant that freak snowstorms happen in the mountains. If I’m not mistaken, the Donner Party got caught in October, which was early for winter. We’re looking at spring and it’s late in the season, but snow happens.”
She cocked her thumb over her shoulder toward the window and visual proof. “I noticed.”
“Obviously we’re not going anywhere tonight. Might as well make the best of it. I think I’ll open a bottle of wine.” Without waiting for a comment, he walked away.
Maggie heard noise in the kitchen, the amazing kitchen with an oblong island big enough to land his Gulfstream. The sound of drawers and cupboards opening and closing drifted to her.
She didn’t know what to do with herself. Wouldn’t you think a place this size would be big enough to lose yourself in? Growing up she’d always had to share a room with one or more girls. Then she did live-in child care and a room of her own came with the territory. Along with a broken heart. She’d never existed anywhere as spacious as Jason’s penthouse and this beautiful, homey, woodsy cabin. Yet with him in it, she’d never experienced an area with less breathing room. Suddenly the walls seemed to close in on her and she opened the front door and stepped into the cold on the porch.
She moved to the edge, where she knew four steps descended to the yard and the lake that was normally visible through the trees.
